Ryotei Ukiyo

Ryotei Ukiyo is a traditional-style fine-dining restaurant with over 150 years of history. Ukiyo was originally established in the mid-nineteenth century as a seafood business and expanded into catering toward the end of the century. From the late nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, following the opening of a military base nearby, an entertainment district emerged in the Takada neighborhood. Ukiyo was converted into a ryotei, a traditional-style high-end restaurant.

The business flourished throughout the early twentieth century, and new rooms were added to the original building to meet growing demand. Today, there are ten rooms on four floors, including a grand hall on the second floor, which accommodates around 120 guests. The hall has a tatami-mat floor and is elaborately decorated with ceiling paintings and wood carvings. The smaller rooms on the third and fourth floors each have their own theme and are used mainly for small private events.

Ryotei Ukiyo is situated within walking distance of Takada Station and the Takada Temple Town. The restaurant specializes in seasonal kaiseki cuisine and offers lunch and dinner service daily in the dining hall. The lunch menu, utilizing locally sourced seasonal ingredients, changes with the four seasons. The building is a registered Tangible Cultural Property. Ukiyo is a founding member of the 100-Year Ryotei Network, a group of ryotei across Japan, each of which has been in business for more than a century and has been recognized as contributing to the preservation of traditional Japanese cuisine and culture.
