Mushigawa Osugi

The tree that's over a thousand years old.

The Mushigawa Giant Cedar Tree is a sacred tree said to be over 1,200 years old. At about 30 meters in height and about 10.6 meters in circumference it is one of the largest cedar trees in Japan. In 1964, it was designated as a natural monument by the Ministry of Education (currently the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). It has a powerfully majestic appearance that has endured the sun in summer and the wind and snow in winter. It brims with vitality and overwhelms the viewer. According to the local inhabitants, many people visit and pray to the tree and believe it has the power to grant health and longevity. Come see the ancient tree that has been loved by generations of people and feel the energy of life.

Traffic access(train): Take the Hokuetsu Kyuko Hokuhoku Line to Mushigawa Osugi Station and from there it's 10 minutes on foot.
Traffic access(bus): Take a Tokei bus to Mushigawa Osugi Eki Mae and from there it's 10 minutes on foot. Buses do not run on Sundays, holidays, Aug.15 & 16 and between Dec.29 and Jan.3. On Saturdays some buses don't run so please check with the Tokei bus center for more details at 025-599-2312.
Traffic access(car): 30 minutes from either the Joetsu IC or Kakizaki IC exits on the Hokuriku Expressway. Or, 70 minutes from the Muikamachi exit on the Kan'etsu Expressway.
