Shin-Etsu Trail (Itakura Ward)

Located on the border of Niigata and Nagano prefectures, it is a rare, 80km-long trail in the country that extends over most of the ridge of the Sekida mountain range at an elevation of 1,000 meters.
The mountain range is rich in natural beech trees. There are 16 passages that connect Shinano and Echigo and served as key points of transportation. Salt and marine products were carried from Echigo while Uchiyama Japanese paper and rapeseed oil were carried from Shinano.
During the Warring States era tens of thousands of soldiers were said to have passed through the trail during the battle of Kenshin Uesugi Kawanakajima.
You can trek from Sekitatoge in Itakura Ward, Joetsu at an elevation of 1,116 meters.
There's a cafeteria at Green Pal Hikari Genso Visitor's Center and simple accommodation at the campsite. Both can be accessed through the approach trail.
