Shin-Etsu Trail (Kiyosato Ward)

Located on the border of Niigata and Nagano prefectures, it is a rare, 80km-long trail in the country that extends over most of the ridge of the Sekida mountain range at an elevation of 1,000 meters.
The mountain range is rich in natural beech trees. There are 16 passages that connect Shinano and Echigo and served as key points of transportation. Salt and marine products were carried from Echigo while Uchiyama Japanese paper and rapeseed oil were carried from Shinano.
During the Warring States era tens of thousands of soldiers were said to have passed through the trail during the battle of Kenshin Uesugi Kawanakajima.
You can trek through the approach trail from Sugadaira or Takinowaki in Kiyosato Ward, Joetsu. Approach points of Sugadaira are displayed on the map.
